So what is Abstract Art?
What is abstract art? I wondered this for many years. I used to think it was bs. I went to an art gallery and saw a canvas with two red dots selling for over $50,000 and almost completely lost faith in the art world. For a long time I used to think abstract art was the lazy version of a real artist. Pretentious art that took no talent whatsoever. The real definition is "art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures."
Truth is...I was wrong. While some of it is pretentious, surprisingly most of it takes an eye and real skill in manipulating the medium correctly. I truly think any piece of art if you look hard enough can be abstract. I think abstract art is what lies in the imperfections of any piece of art. And if it is truly handmade there WILL be imperfections (we just learn how to cleverly hide them).
A few of my most favorite abstract pieces were born from a total disaster. Take for example the aegean sea. This piece started HORRENDOUSLY. I actually had to chop off about 4 inches that I messed up! The end result was so gorgeous it was such a happy accident. I feel as though that was how most abstract art was first created!
The real fact of the matter is now abstract art makes up most of my favorites pieces. They also lend better as wall decor and allow you to make your space very interesting.
